Syneron Galaxy IPL ELOS
IPL- Intense Pulsed Light is a skin renewal technology that uses the energy from a powerful source of light waves known as a flashlamp. This light energy is similar to a laser but is used in a way that does not damage the outer layers of the skin as was true for most of the previously used skin renewal lasers. The light energy is focused through a handpiece that also cools the skin to prevent damage as well. This allows the light energy to focus on specific areas such as dark spots or small blood vessels. The effect is that the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, is left intact while the problem area is treated. The Syneron Galaxy uses the coupling of this light energy with an electrical current to allow deeper penetration of the effect while using less energy. What this means to you is that there is minimal to no downtime involved- usually there is no redness or swelling; but occasionally there may be a small amount that typically resolves in 1-2 days. The effect is more gradual than some of the previous treatments and usually requires several courses of treatment 3-4 weeks apart. The actual treatment itself usually takes no more than 20 minutes and does not require anesthesia. There is some discomfort involved during the treatment- I would characterize it as similar to the snap of a rubber band or a static electricity shock that you get from carpet during the winter time- coupled with a very bright flash of light- and is more startling than painful. Numbing cream can be used for those with sensitive skin and it does help. The discomfort ends when the treatment is over.
So what types of skin problems are best suited to this treatment? Pigment spots such as “liver spots” or “age spots” ( medically termed Lentigos) and red skin with small broken vessels such as is seen in rosacea are two of the ideal candidates. Fine wrinkles and some types of acne scarring can also be improved. Light skinned patients with unwanted hair are also ideal candidates for this therapy. Patients with tanned or very dark skin are probably not considered good candidates as they can have more side effects than the lighter skinned individuals. Of course, consultation with Dr. Jordan is the best way to determine if your particular skin type can be effectively and safely treated with IPL.
